About Zapp

Catering for impulse purchases and urgent need use cases, Zapp delivers everyday items to customers’ doorsteps in less than 20 minutes, 24/7. To make this possible, Zapp operates its own micro fulfillment centers and each ‘store’ stocks up to 2,000 products ready to be picked, packed and delivered. Zapp’s own riders then go the extra mile to make every order a ‘wow’ experience.

Zapp is active in London and is already plotting expansion across Europe and other global hotspots in the coming months.

“Zapp is building the future of convenience retail and that future must be sustainable. Partnering with Planetly is not only enabling us to measure and track our carbon footprint but also continually invest in reducing emissions, and offsetting where that's not yet possible.”

Background & Objectives

Sustainability and inclusivity are at the core of Zapp’s culture - its use of electric vehicles and equitable employment for riders and warehouse staff are two key examples of this.

Operating sustainably from the start was very important to Zapp. The startup reached out to Planetly early on in its journey to help build a delivery service with sustainability at its core.

Planetly supports Zapp by calculating its carbon footprint as it scales, developing carbon reduction measures and offsetting emissions that cannot yet be avoided.

Zapp Wants to Reduce Carbon Emissions Long-Term

With sustainability a priority, Zapp has elected to use electric vehicles for delivery. Beyond that, the products are delivered in recyclable paper bags.

Zapp is also committed to giving back to the local community. This includes a partnership with food sharing app OLIO to reduce food waste by sharing surplus food instead of throwing it away. Between January and May 2021, Zapp prevented over 1,065 kg of food from going to waste.

Zapp’s Offset Portfolio

Even though Zapp only began operations in early 2021, the company has committed to taking climate action immediately. This includes compensating for 1,000 tonnes of CO2e by supporting certified climate action projects. At the end of the year, we will validate Zapp’s carbon footprint to make sure this compensation fully covers Zapp’s emissions for 2021.

In India, Zapp supports a solar energy project that feeds additional renewable energy into the electricity grid across the country. The project also creates jobs and has funded 20 water purification plants in nearby villages.

Zapp’s second project provides access to a safe and reliablewater supply to rural communities in particularly dry regions of Rwanda. This project has a strong community focus and includes educating the rural population on the importance of appropriate sanitation and hygiene in an effort to reduce the spread of diseases and improve health and wellbeing.

Lastly, Zapp supports a project in Borneo that prevents 64,500 hectares of biodiversity rich lowland peat forest from conversion to oil palm plantations. This not only prevents 3.5 million tonnes of CO2e from being released into the atmosphere each year, it continues to effectively support both local communities and protect threatened biodiversity and wildlife habitat.
