Planetly Supports KP Logistik on the Journey to Carbon Neutrality

KP Logistik is a family business with roots in Denmark. Together with Planetly, the company gained transparency about its carbon footprint and offset its emissions for 2020. Moving forward, KP Logistik wants to reduce all avoidable emissions.

Background & Objectives

With 150 trucks and more than 400 employees, KP Logistik is a sound and successfully managed family business with a company history spanning more than 60 years.

For KP Logistik, it is essential to transport goods in the most environmentally friendly way possible. To do so, the company has, for example, already converted its fleet in Germany to LNG trucks.  LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) is a natural gas cooled down to approximately -165° Celsius with a better environmental balance than oil and coal-based energy sources.

KP Logistik has now teamed up with Planetly to create complete transparency about the company's carbon footprint and to develop a long-term reduction strategy.

KP Logistik's Carbon Footprint

To validate the carbon footprint, we looked at the activities of KP Logistik's three sites in Stavenhagen and Wustermark in Germany and Køge in Denmark.

All relevant scope 1 and 2 activities were taken into account as well as the well-to-tank (WTT) emissions from fuels through upstream activities such as production, processing and transport. In addition, we included the fugitive emissions and the production emissions of the coolant used by KP Logistik.

Analysis Results

The largest share of KP Logistik's carbon footprint is generated by the company's fleet of vehicles, for which the company uses diesel, LNG, HVO diesel and CNG biogas. The carbon footprint also includes fugitive emissions generated by the cooling of goods such as food. Emissions also occur from fuel & energy-related activities such as the fuel production for the trucks (scope 3.3). A comparatively small share of the company's carbon footprint accounts for the electricity consumption of all company locations.

KP Logistik Wants to Reduce & Avoid Emissions

In recent years, KP Logistik has already taken several measures to reduce emissions that are not yet fully avoidable.

With a total of 110 Scania R410s, the company operates one of the largest LNG fleets in Germany. In Denmark, KP Logistik uses CNG trucks (Compressed Natural Gas is natural gas compressed to 200 bar) in addition to modern diesel vehicles and refuels exclusively with biogas.

Since 2014, the Køge site has been operating a solar plant on 130 m2 roof space. At the German site in Wustermark, a solar plant is also planned for 2021. The company plans to use the electricity produced there for cooling in trailers with refrigerated goods on the factory premises. This way, less diesel fuel will be needed for cooling.

On top of that, 14 vehicles in Køge are going to be equipped with Hulsteins units before the end of 2021. These units use the energy generated by the truck engine for cooling - therefore, less diesel fuel is needed for cooling here as well.

Based on the results of our carbon analysis, KP Logistik wants to develop a reduction strategy to further reduce all avoidable emissions in the future.

KP Logistik Offset Its Carbon Emissions for 2020

KP Logistik has decided to offset its emissions for the year 2020 by supporting a wind energy project in Turkey.

The project aims to help realise Turkey's wind potential to meet the growing electricity demand and thus reduce environmental pollution from fossil fuels.
