About MGI

Background & Objectives

Being active in the media and games industry, MGI is highly aware of the energy consumption in this sector. In order to develop games and run programmatic advertising, companies in this sector need server capacities, which can lead to a significant CO2 footprint. As a company, MGI strongly believes that we all need to act responsibly with our resources, which is why they have decided to cooperate with Planetly.

They wanted to find an easy way in which they can efficiently and quickly measure their emissions, so that they could find ways to reduce them. Planetly’s all-in-one solution with its easy-to-use platform was the right fit for them to easily track emissions and act on the results to become a more sustainable company.

“We at MGI believe that our business is not only about the financials and numbers, but we also need to take responsibility in terms of sustainability and integrate this into our acting. We are convinced that it is possible to act sustainably while running a successful business, in fact for us, both aspects are mutually dependent. One piece of this puzzle was to find a way how we can reduce our CO2 emissions. With Planetly, we have found a partner that can help us to easily track our emissions but can also advise us how to reduce our emissions further, which is an important aspect in our sustainability strategy.”

MGI's Carbon Footprint

To calculate the carbon footprint, we took a closer look at all relevant activities across MGI’s operations. This includes not only direct and energy-related emissions (Scope 1 & 2) but also other indirect emissions that occur outside the organisation (Scope 3).

The various types of emissions are calculated in CO2 equivalents (short: CO2e) to make them addable and comparable. Adding up all emissions, MGI had a footprint of 4.499 t CO2e in 2020.

Analysis Results

MGI’s biggest emission drivers are external service providers the company uses - including freelancers, IT services and marketing-related services - followed by emissions from employee commute, business travel and building emissions such as heating.

Outlook

MGI Is Committed to Reduce Its Own Environmental Impact

Over the years, MGI has taken several initiatives to reduce its climate impact. So far, they have switched to cloud solutions to deliver their computing power, whenever this was possible. Besides that, they also switched to data centres that are powered with green energy for all operations that cannot be done from the cloud.

MGI’s employees are also offered grants to use public transportation to commute, and they are encouraged to communicate through video conferences to avoid travelling. Moreover, offices are equipped with water dispensers to reduce the use of plastic bottles and a recycling policy has been implemented.

MGI also involves their players in doing their part for the environment in cooperation with the company. Thus, they have set up a permanent partnership with the Eden Reforestation Projects where players can plant a virtual tree in one of the games and MGI then plants a tree in the real world. Since the start of the cooperation, already over 200,000 trees were planted.

CLimate action

MGI Takes Climate Action

Offsetting is a relevant stepping-stone to have an immediate impact on unavoidable emissions. MGI therefore decided to offset the company’s carbon footprint from 2020 by supporting 4 different climate projects which were chosen by the company’s employees: the Solar Power for Education and Jobs Project in Kenya, the REDD+ Borneo Rainforest Protection Project in Indonesia, the Clean Water Project in Rwanda and the Clean Drinking Water Project in Zimbabwe.
