everphone takes Sustainability to the Next Level

everphone is the one-stop solution for corporate devices. Since 2016, the start-up has been offering an innovative concept for the procurement, management and integration of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets in a corporate context. everphone follows a sustainable circular economy approach by extending the lifetime of devices.  The "Phone as a Service'' model gives employees a free choice of company devices, allows flexible upgrades, and includes both GDPR-compliant mobile device management (MDM) and a rapid replacement service in the event of defects.

As part of its own sustainability efforts, the company works with Planetly to gain transparency about its carbon emissions and to identify effective action to reduce them over time.

Background & Objectives

everphone being sustainable by design with its circular economy business model is extending the lifetime of devices. After the first service period ends, devices are returned to everphone. The company then takes care of the certified data deletion, the refurbishment and brings them into a second life cycle. If refurbishing is not possible, they recycle the mobile device so that valuable precious metals and other raw materials can be recovered.

With everphone’s simple and sustainable service model for mobile devices, they support customers with their device management and contribute to improving their organisational and cost efficiency. Their goal is to make the use of mobile devices as sustainable as possible.

everphone not only aims at bringing sustainable solutions to their customers, but also at becoming more sustainable as a company by tracking their own carbon footprint and by implementing reduction measures.

's Carbon Footprint

To calculate the carbon footprint, we took a closer look at all relevant activities across everphone’s operations. This includes not only direct and energy-related emissions (Scope 1 & 2) but also indirect emissions that occur outside the organisation (Scope 3).

The various types of emissions are calculated in CO2 equivalents (short: CO2e) to make them addable and comparable. Adding up all emissions, everphone had a footprint of 2,379 t CO2e in 2020.


Analysis Results

everphone’s biggest emission drivers are caused in the supply chain by the production of smartphones and in the use-phase, followed by emissions from activities such as purchased goods and services.

everphone is Committed to Reduce its Environmental Impact

everphone implements sustainability and compliance already in their business model. They obtain green electricity, offer a generous remote policy which allows employees to work from anywhere, thus reducing the commuting of employees. The company uses a water dispenser instead of bottled water, does not offer company cars and uses green logistics to cut emissions.

In the next step, everphone will reduce emissions in the office through smart heating and lightning. The company also plans to lower its employees’ emissions by offering job tickets and vegetarian food.

everphone Takes Climate Action

Offsetting is a relevant stepping-stone to have an immediate impact on unavoidable emissions. everphone therefore decided to offset the company’s carbon footprint from 2020 by supporting a climate project in Ethiopia. The project reduces the deforestation of local forests by distributing cleaner cookstoves to households of rural coffee farmers. Thanks to this project, 12,000 efficient cooking stoves have been installed, preventing the deforestation and burning of 25,000 kilogrammes of wood. This corresponds to a saving of 40,000 tonnes of CO2e into the atmosphere.

In addition to offsetting, the company supports a carbon removal project in Sweden to reduce emissions through carbon storage. This carbon removal project produces biochar, a very stable, solid form of carbon that can endure in soil for thousands of years.
